Kumho Tyre Australia has thrown its backing behind the new V8 Classic Racing Series, which will see some of the most iconic cars from Australian touring car history taking to the track at rounds of the Australian Motor Racing Series (AMRS).
The Kumho V8 Classic Racing Series has been created as a partnership between Kumho Tyre national motorsport agent, David Atkin and the AMRS.
The V8 Classic Racing Series will be managed by Atkin’s business, Prime Race Services and will hit the track for its inaugural round at Queensland Raceway on 6-8 August ahead of a full five or six-round series on the 2022 AMRS program.
The series will be contested by superseded V8 touring cars, ranging in age from the mid-1990s Holden VR and VS Commodores and Ford EF and EL Falcons, all the way through to the VE Commodores and FG Falcons of the early 2010s.
Prime Race Services is predicting a field of between 10 and 15 cars for the debut race meeting at Queensland Raceway and is confident the abundance of eligible vehicles will see fields grow in future rounds.
Atkin said the creation of the Kumho V8 Classic Racing Series will provide a playground for owners of classic V8 touring cars in a cost-effective and competitive environment.
“There were millions of dollars of race machinery, components and assets sitting idle and the creation of this new series will enable car owners to return to the circuit, thanks to the support of Kumho and cooperation of AMRS,” Atkin said.
“Kumho is passionate about delivering value to the competitors, and has committed to a generous support package that includes a low entry fees, a travel expense subsidy, a tyre price subsidy and a prize pool of cash and tyres.”
Atkin said the AMRS provides the perfect platform for the new-look V8 class.
“AMRS’ business philosophy has four pillars of operation: value, fun, respect and engagement,” he said.
“All of the competitors as well as Kumho believe AMRS will deliver the ideal environment for a highly competitive and exciting race category.”
Kumho Tyre National Marketing Manager, Kenny Chun, said the brand is proud to be involved with a category that promotes close, competitive racing.
“COVID has had a big impact on our motorsport marketing programme, but we are pleased to have the opportunity to support the Kumho V8 Classic Racing Series – we look forward to promoting the series and race teams involved,” Chun said.
AMRS Series Manager Matt Baragwanath said the Kumho V8 Classic Racing Series will be a major drawcard for fans.
“We’re already fortunate enough to have very entertaining categories on our program, but the addition of the Kumho V8 Classic Racing Series is a mouth-watering prospect,” Baragwanath said.
“Motorsport fans will remember the iconic vehicles that were raced by names such as Mark Skaife, Craig Lowndes, John Bowe, Glenn Seton, Greg Murphy, Larry Perkins and Russell Ingall and its super-exciting to have those cars on track at AMRS rounds.”
Each round of the Kumho V8 Classic Racing Series will consist of two 20-minute practice sessions, a 20-minute qualifying session, two 20-minute sprint races and a 25-minute feature race.
The Kumho V8 Classic Racing Series will feature as part of the AMRS live stream broadcast package, produced by Fuzzy Media.
